1920s Halloween Costumes

Ever wonder what a flapper might have worn for Halloween?
Me too...so I found some photos for us to enjoy.

Not sure what some of these 1920s costumes are, but a couple of them are really creepy!

Halloween Costume Idea - The Suffragette

This is my favorite Halloween costume idea so far!

With all of the current political talk about the "war on women" and how women may be loosing ground in our on-going struggle for rights, I think we might just need another generation of fighters like those who have come before us.   From the late 1800s until 1920 (when the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote was ratified), brave women took to the streets to demand one of the most basic of rights - the right to vote.
So, if you're into making political/historical statements at Halloween, this is a good one!

To achieve the suffragette look, you'll need an outfit from the Edwardian period.  This would best be a hip-length or thigh-length overcoat, a matching long skirt, ankle boots, a lacy blouse, and a large wide-brim hat.  While you could spend lots of time and money searching for an authentic piece, I'd recommend going retro for these pieces.

Here is an example of the type of suit a women from this period would have worn.  (source)
The colors of the suffragette movement were purple, green, and white.  Banners and even jewelry were carried and worn by woman to show their support of the movement.   According to a 1908 issue of the weekly newspaper Votes for Women, Mrs. Pethick-Lawrence explained the symbolism of these colors:
"Purple as everyone knows is the royal colour. It stands for the royal blood that flows in the veins of every suffragette, the instinct of freedom and dignity...white stands for purity in private and public life...green is the colour of hope and the emblem of spring." (source)

And the suffragettes were all about their banners and sandwich boards.

But...if you just can't pull together a Edwardian outfit, try the next big step in the women's rights movement...the bra-burners of the 1960s and the ERA movement of the 1970s.

Deliverance (the movie)

Halloween Costume Ideas - Deliverance

This one is a bit out there, but...

40 years ago, Deliverance began shaping the views of mountain people and banjo music for an entire generation.  So, for the Ruby anniversary of this very creepy movie, why not celebrate it?!  Yes, the deliverance look is more the boys, but I'm sure there are creative gals out there who could make it work.   All you need are some 1970s rugged clothes and maybe some 70s sideburns.  Easy as that!

If you can carry a canoe with you Halloween night, that would be a great touch!
Yes, those 70s sideburns are a must!

To pull of the "locals" looks, suspenders, facial hair, and dirt are necessary.  If you can fake the bad dental work, that is an extra bonus.
If you want to be a "local" on the losing side, you need an arrow through your chest.

There are a few other scenes which could make for interesting costumes, but...I'll let you figure those out on your own (squeal).  :-)

Halloween Costume Ideas - Halloween Pin Up

Halloween seems to bring out a plethora of "sexy" costumes, but this isn't a new phenomenon!  If you want to show a little skin this year, why not go back to a classic, sexy pin-up look?  Witches were a popular Halloween-bombshell look in the 1940s and 1950s, so make sure you have a pointy hat!

Remember, the key to the Halloween Pin-Up is sexy Hollywood glamour...NOT trashy or slutty.

Love that she's in her uber-sexy 50s lingerie...just add a hat and broom!

Halloween Costume Ideas - Mad Men

Tis the season for donning wild and wacky costumes...and we're here to help you find some that fulfill your need to dress in vintage.

The first of our ideas is perhaps an obvious one, but a good one nonetheless...Mad Men, Season 5

Betty Draper
This season, we saw a larger Betty...this could be a fun alternative to the last few years of "classic Betty".   This one is as easy as finding a more "matronly" 1960s dress and stuffing yourself into it.
And how much fun would this look be for a guy?!

Megan Draper
Megan has one of the most fun wardrobes...young and hip.  To pull off her look, definitely find a fun MOD dress, add some tights and a pair of flats.

The men of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce
And for the boys, the look can be more casual this year.  Add a little color and pattern.  Remember...narrow lapels, skinny ties, and flat-front pants.

Or...something a little more wacky...Roger's acid trip.

Secondary characters that offer some fun costume ideas...

Paul as a Hare Krishna
Peggy's friend Joyce
